Egmont, Lamoral

COUNT OF, a distinguished nobleman of Flanders, was B. in 1522, and served in the armies of Charles V. with great reputation. He was made general of horse by Philip II., and distinguished himself at the battle of St. Quentin in 1557. But the Duke of Alva, on the pretence that he meditated designs in favor of the Prince of Orange, caused him, together with Count Horn, to be beheaded at Bru els, in 1568.
