an ecclesiastical prince in the Romish Church who has a vote in the election of a new Pope, the Popes being taken from the cardinals. There are three cla es of cardinals, comprising 6 bishops, 50 priests, and 14 deacons. They constitute the Sacred College. The youngest cardinal ever created was Giovanni de Medici, who was made one when he was 13, and who afterwards became Pope Leo X. The youngest English cardinal was Henry Stuart, who was 22. Reginald Pole was 36, Wolsey 44, Wiseman 48, 60. 78.
