CALLITRIS

(probably altered from kallistos, most beautiful; referring to the whole plant). O RD. Coniferæ. S YN. Frenela. Half-hardy evergreen shrubs or small trees, with long, very slender-jointed branches, and often very minute, scale-like, persistent leaves. Flowers monœcio us. Fruit globular, composed of four to six—rarely eight—unequal, woody, valvate scales, with one or two seeds at the base of each. All the species are somewhat tender, in England, except in the more southern districts. They require a sandy loam compost. Propagated by cuttings, inserted under a hand light in autumn, and protected by a cold pit; or by seeds.
