London 1819; ed. at univ. of Glasgow; bookseller with John Joseph Griffin in Glasgow 1836–53 and in London 1847–53; bought the Encyclopædia Metropolitan a for £5,000 about 1847; bookseller alone in Glasgow 1853–9; left Glasgow and managed London busine 1859–61; partner with Henry Bohn in Stationers’ hall court, Jany. 1861 to death. d.
