(an’-thra-sen) [avdpa^, a coal], CUH10. A hydrocarbon formed from many carbon compounds when they are exposed to a high heat; also from coal-tar. It crystallizes in colorle , monoclinic tables, showing a beautiful blue fluorescence; di olves with difficulty in alcohol and ether, but easily in al hot benzene; melts at 2130. It is the base from which artificial alizarin is prepared. 65
