DI BERNARDO, 1469-1527. Italian author; Sec. of the Florentine Republic 1498-1512. His Floren tine History covers the period 1215-1499; his Art of War has been highly valued. Far better known is his Prince, which, after the ideas of his time, defends absolutism and treachery, and sets up Cesar Borgia as an example. It was written for the Medici, apparently in all seriousne , and not as a satire.
