U. S. laws require the enrollment into the militia of all able-bodied males between 18 and 45 years, with certain exceptions. The organized militia force in 1896 comprised 1,407 generals and general staff-officers, 5,061 cavalry, 5,058 artillery, 107.450 infantry, total 118.976; total liable to military duty 10,149,598; naval militia 3,339.
