Henry, an American naval officer; born in New York in Sep temper, 1832; was graduated at the Unitad States Naval Academy in 1854; promoted master, Sept. 16, 1855; lieufenant, = 2, 1856; lieutenant-commander, July 16, 1862; commander, May 6, 1868; captain, Nov. 1, 1879; commodore, April 8, 1892; rear-adniral in 1894; and was retired in the latter year. During the Civil War he served with Admiral Farragut in the Gulf of Mexico, and on the Mi i ippi river with Admiral Dupont, atc. In 1863-1869 he was on duty in South America; later, when in command of the “Tuscarora,” he made deep-sea soundings in the Pacific; afterward commanded the “ Pensacola ”’ in a trip round the world; and in 1891-1892 was commandant of the New York Navy Yard. Died in 1909.
