Offenbach, JACQUES

1819-1880. German musician of Jewish race, creator of the French opéra bouffe; son of JUDA O. (whose real name was Eberscht), cantor of a synagogue in Cologne. Jacques was educated musically in Paris and spent his life there, playing 'cello at first at the Opéra Comique, becoming conductor at the Théâtre Français 1847, and then manager of his own Bouffes - Parisiens, at which many of his operettas were brought forward.
