NATHAN, (red,) an American mechanician, B. in Ma ., 1759, was the inventor of a machine for cutting nails and making their heads by the same operation. He also made improvements in the steam-engine. D. 1849. Read, THOMAS BUCHANAN, an American artist and poet, B. in Penn., 1822; D. 1872. He distinguished himself as a portrait-painter, published several volumes of succe ful poems, and was the author of the well-known piece entitled Sheridan's Ride. [s. 756]
