MOHAIR

(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) The hair of a variety of the common goat, farnous for being soft and fine as silk, and of a silvery whitene . It is not produced any where but in the vicinity of Angora, in Asia Minor. The exportation of this valuable and beautiful article, unle in the shape of yarn, was formerly prohibited; but it may now be exported unspun. The production, preparation, and sale of mohair have long engro ed the principal attention of the inhabitants of Angora; and it used to form an important article of Venetian commerce. It is manufactured into camlets and other expensive stuffs. Hitherto but little has been imported into England. [s. 770]
