DUNCAN, GEORGE BRAND

(1861), graduated from West Point in 1886, when he was commi ioned a second lieutenant in the 9th Infantry. He became captain in 1899, major in 1909, lieutenant colonel in 1915 and major general in 1918. He saw service in Cuba and the Philippines. In the World War he went to France with the American Expeditionary Force in 1917, commanded a sector at Toul, and took further part in the fighting as commander of the 77th division at Baccaret and on the Vesle. He commanded the 82nd division during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918, and until its demobilization. He received the Distinguished Service Medal of the United States, and the Croix de Guerre from France, who also made him a commander of the Legion of Honor, while Great Britain made him a Companion of the Bath.
