Pith

(pith.) [ From A. S. pith a. (Bot.) The soft spongy substance in the centre of the stems of the plants. It consists of minute cells closely packed together, sometimes of a rounded or oval shape, but usually angular. The young P. abounds with fluid, which serves to nourish the plant. Afterwards it becomes dry, and often disappears altogether. [s. 712]
