[Fr., from Lat. emarcus =a kind of vine.] The refuse matter remaining after the pre ure of fruit, as of grapes, olives, . mar'-ca-site, *mar'-cha-site, subst. [A word of Arabic origin; O. Ger. march as it a; Mod. German mark as it.] Min.: This name formerly included all crystallized pyrites, but Haidinger, in 1845, confined it to crystals mostly twinned, or as globular or reniform ma es with fibrous structure, and ma ive. Hardne , 6-6.5; specific gravity, 4-678-4-847. Luster, metallic; color, pale bronze ello. to greenish gray; streak, grayish or brownish-black. Fracture IMG:content-0926.png:[blocks in formation] uneven. Brittle. Composition: As in pyrites, sulmarch (1), marc he, s. [Fr.=a frontier; O. H. phur, 53-3; iron, 46.7; formula, FeS2. The German Ger. march a; A. S. mearc=a mark, a boundary.] mineralogists distinguish seven varieties, resulting A frontier or boundary of a territory; especially mainly from their habit of crystallization: (1) applied to the boundaries or confines of political Radiated ( Strahlkies ); (2) Cockscomb Pyrites divisions, or to the country lying near and about (Kammkies); (3) Spear Pyrite ( Speerkies ), (4) Capillary Pyrites ( Haarkies ); (5) Hopatic Pyrites (Leberkies); (6) Cellular Pyrites ( Zellkies ); (7) Ar- senical Pyrites, the same as KYROSITE (q. v.). The pyrites of sedimentary rocks mostly belongs to this species, and that of metamorphic and igneous rocks to Pyrites (q. v.). More prone to decomposi tion than pyrites. Occurs abundantly in clays of various formations, and in the chalk.
