Petroleum ointment; Cosmolin. A jelly-like preparation obtained from the residium of petroleum, soluble in ether, insoluble in water and alcohol, and known commercially as vaselin and as cosmolin. It is an excellent basis for ointments and a valuable emollient. P. molle, soft petrolatum. P. spi um, hard petrolatum.
