Fontainebleau

(fön-tān'blo,) a town of France, dept. Seine-et-Marne, 32 m. S.S.E. of Paris. This place owes its celebrity to the magnificent royal residence which has served as the abode of a long line of French monarchs, and is situated in the midst of the Forest of F., a richly-wooded demesne of 34,200 acres. This splendid château is rife with memorable historical events, chief of which was the abdication of Napoleon I. Pop. 13,123. [s. 373]
