town, Aisne, France (49° 24’ of So is sons; sugar refinery; 12th cent. church; in first battle of the Aisne, Sept. 1914, bridgehead at this point defied the first attacks of the Allies, and the Germans continued to hold the high ground overlooking the river; taken by the French, April 18, 1917; recovered by the Germans in their offensive, May 1918, and finally taken by the French, Sept. 1918. Pop. 1,500. (ancient Vasio), town, on Ouvéze, Vaucluse, France; Rom. remains. ' DUISM. border canton, Switzerland, to N. of Italy; area, 2027 sq. miles. Surface consists of a deep valley about 80 miles long and 2 broad, between Pennine and Bernese Alps; drained by RhGne; there are forests with valuable timber-trees on the mountain slopes, and a considerable area is covered with excellent pasturage; cattle raised; silk-worms reared; wine produced. Chief town, Sion. V. is connected with Italy by the Simplon and Great St. Bernard Pa es. Has been a member of Swi confederation since 1815. Pop. 1921, 128,246.
