A lid, cover, leaf, ball, box, disc, plug, or plate, lifting, oscillating, rotating, or sliding in connection with a port or aperture, so as to permit or prevent the pa age of a fluid through the port which it guards. Valves are of several cla es, and the most important are described in this Dictionary under their distinctive names, as, Cup-valve, Safety valve (q. v.), . 4. Zool .: A portion of a shell complete in itself. In a great many of the Mollusca proper the shell consists of a single piece, and they are called Univalves. In many others the shell consists of two separate plates or valves, and these are called Bivalves. In others, again, as in the Chiton, the shell consists of more than two pieces, and is said be multi valve. Most, however, of the multi valve
