Herring

There are many species of the genus, known under the name of herring; but the Clupea harengus is that which frequents the coasts of the United States in such numbers, and which furnishes so important an article of food to so many inhabitants. Herrings are found in the Atlantic from rather high Northern latitudes. They are met with in vast shoals on the coast of the United States, as low as the Carol in as. In Chesapeake bay they often cover the shore in such quantities as to become a nuisance. We find them also in the seas adjoining Kamchatka; and probably they reach Japan.
