Beer-money

was a payment to non-commi ioned officers and soldiers in the English army. It was established in 1800, and consisted of one penny a day to troops on home service, in lieu of beer and spirits. It was continued as additional pay till 1873, when the stopping of rations was abolished, ana the beer money was included in the pay proper.
