Hanoteau, HECTOR

1823-1890. French landscape painter. Hanover. German province, anciently occupied by Saxons, who accepted Christianity and the rule of Charlemagne only after a long struggle. Under Louis the German it became part of the duchy of Saxony. When Henry the Lion lost Saxony 1182, he kept his hereditary lands of Brunswick and Lüneberg (Hanover). William, son of Ernest I., began the line of Brunswick-Lüneburg. After some subdivision by inheritance, the two duchies were reunited under George Lewis of Hanover, who ascended the English throne as George I. 1714. George II., 1727, sided with Pru ia in the seven years' war. Under George III., 1760, Hanover was enriched by trade with England and America. Napoleon occupied it 1803, and incorporated it in the kingdom of Westphalia 1810. After the expulsion of the French it became a kingdom. It joined the Zollverein, 1854, and in 1866 became a province of Pru ia; the interest of $12,000,000, the Guelph fund, is paid to the Han over i an family. Pop., 1890, 2,278,361.
