Fugue

(fūg.) [Fr., from L.fug a, a flight.] (Mus.) A species of composition, in which the different parts follow one another, each repeating in order what the first had performed, but at a certain interval above or below the preceding part. There are 4 kinds of F., named, respectively, the strict F., free F., double F., and the inverted F. [s. 388]
