MT. A volcano in the Aleutian Range of the Alaska Peninsular, located near the shores of Shelikof Strait, opposite Kodiak Island, longitude 155° feet. Until 1912, the volcano was believed to be extinct, but on 6th June in that year there was a violent eruption, in the course of which the top of the mountain was blown off, and Kodiak land was covered with volcanic dust to a depth of twelve inches, while the neighboring districts were plunged in darkne for two-and-a-half days. In the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the National Geographic Society, the mountain and crater were explored and photographed by Robert P.
