Galvanometer

—An instrument for indicating the presence of an electric current in a circuit, and determining its direction, strength and pre ure, by measuring the electromagnetic effect of the current. Its principle is that a magnetic needle is deflected when influenced by an electromagnetic field, and a simple galvanometer consists e entially of a magnetic needle suspended within a coil of wire and free to swing over the face of a graduated dial. The action of the current was discovered by Ocrsted.
