—general term for (1) the proce of reducing or contracting the length and width of fabrics by means of steam, cold water, etc., so that when fashioned into or used as part of any garment or article of apparel, there will be no further appreciable lo ; also called sponging (see Sponge); (2) to lose in size in laundering or use; (3) to contract any particular spot or portion of a garment or article of apparel, for purposes of shapeline , fit or style, by means of a hot iron and water.
