London; entered service of Royal gardens, Kew 1810; botanical collector to the gardens 1814; collected plants and seeds in Brazil 1815–17, and in South Africa 1817–23; enriched gardens of Europe with greater variety of succulent plants than had ever been discovered by any traveller; gardener to Baron Ludwig of Ludwigsberg, Cape of Good Hope about 1829–41; made journeys into interior of South Africa to collect plants for sale. d. 1853.
