[From Gr. diarrheo, I flow through.] (Med.) A disease characterized by frequent liquid al vine evacuations, and generally owing to inflammation or irritation of the mucous membrane of the intestines. It is commonly caused by errors in regimen, the use of food noxious by its quality or quantity, & c. D. requires different treatment, according to its nature. If only due to arrested or defective intestinal digestion, as is often the case, it calls for little or no treatment. If the contents of the large intestine be not spontaneously expelled, an evacuant remedy must be given, and a saline purgative is best adapted to this end. [s. 284]
