parchment paper

Paper made by immersing ordinary unsized paper for a few moments in sulphuric acid, diluted with about half its volume of water. On drying it is found to have a umed a new character, resembling rather that of animal membrane than vegetable fiber, and its strength is nearly doubled. After the immersion it is washed in water, afterward in dilute ammonia, and if any of the latter remains it is removed by lime or baryta. Also called Vegetable parchment. *parçh-ment-er, s.
