City of Peru; ancient capital of the Incas, 11,400 ft. above the sea. It contained the great temple of the Sun, on a site now occupied by the cathedral, and other splendid buildings, besides the immense fort which remains. When entered by Pizarro 1533 it had 200,000 inhabitants. Pop. ab. 20,000, mostly Indians.
