(shoor'te.) [Fr. su reté.] (Law.) One who enters in a bond or recognizance to answer for another's appearance in court, for his payment of debt, or for the performance of some act, and who, in case of the principal's failure, is compellable to pay the penalty, debt, or damages. [s. 869]
