1736-1799. Orator and patriot of the Revolution. He led the opposition to the Stamp Act in the Va. House of Burge es; was Speaker of the first general Congre 1774, and Gov. of Va. 1776-79 and 1781-86. He was IMG:content-0556.png:[blocks in formation] elected to the Federal Convention of 1787, but refused to take his seat. He opposed the ratification of the Constitution by Va., on the ground that it unduly restricted the power of the mi ionary in Japan 1859-92, author of an important Japanese dictionary 1872.
