CHANCE

A term applied to events that are supposed to happen without any known or nece ary cause; or rather, of which the cause is such that they may happen in one way as well as another. Thus, when a piece of money is to ed up into the air, as no reason can be given wh^ it should fall on one side rather than on the other, it is said to be an even chance which of the sides shall turn up.
