(förmik.) (From formica, an ant so called from having been originally found in ants.) (Chem.) A transparent, colorle liquid, of a pungent odor, and very corrosive. It mixes with water in all proportions, and unites with bases to form salts, which are called Formiates. It is the first term of a series of homologous acids formed by the oxidation of the alcohols, acetic acid being the second term. Form. HO-C Hoz. [s. 375]
