luciform

[Lat. luci fugus = shunning the light: lux (gen it. lucis ) = light, and fugio to fly from.] 1. Ichthy. ( sing .): A genus of Ophidiidae (q. v.). The eye is absent, or quite rudimentary, and covered by the skin. There are no barbels, but in their stead are numerous minute cilise or tubercles. Habitat, subterranean waters of caves in Cuba. ( Günther .) 2. Zool. ( pl .): A name sometimes applied to the Blattide, because of their nocturnal habits, and, po ibly, with a remembrance of the "lucifuge blatte" of Virgil ( Georgic iv. 243).
