[NL., axolotls. They belong to the salamandrine series of the Urodela, and are related to the newts, efts, salamanders, etc. Very often written, by mistake, Am by stoma. See cut under axolotl. The axolotl is the larval state of Amblystoma ; but it sometimes remains in that state throughout life, and is at the same time most prolific, while those which must be supposed to have attained a higher form are utterly sterile, the sexual organs becoming apparently atrophied.
