Precipitate

(pre-sip'e-tāt.) (Chem.) Anything thrown out of a combination of which it is a constituent, on the addition of a substance capable of producing a new combination with the other constituents. Thus if lime be added to a solution of sulphate of magnesia, magnesia is precipitated, being displaced by the lime which enters into combination with the acid. The substance employed to make the P. is called precipitant and the substance which is separated by its action, the precipitate. [s. 728]
