Order

(ördür.) [From L. ordo, a sequence.] (Arch.) A system or a emblage of parts subject to certain uniform established proportions, regulated by the office which each part has to perform. There are 5 cla ical orders, distinguished by the base, capital, and entablature of their columns, viz., the Tuscan, the Doric, the Ionic, the Corinthian, and the Composite.-(Zool.) A group of animals, constituted for the purpose of cla ification, inferior to cla or sub-cla , but superior to family, tribe, genus.-(Bot.) A division of an alliance, synonymous with family, and comprising those genera which, though varying in some respects from each other,have the e ential characters alike.-(Her.) An aggregate of religious or conventual communities comprehended under one rule, consisting in the Roman Catholic Church of 3 cla es, viz.-the Monastic, the Military, and the Mendicant.
