Coff

Coffadeliah, in Mi i ippi . See COFFODELIAH. Coffe'n, n. [Probably from Caffa , a province of Aby in i a.] ( Bot . ) A genus of plants, order Cinchonacese. The species C. arabica is the coffee-plant, or cahwa of the Arabs, the seeds of which, when roasted and ground, are used to prepare the daily and most cherished drink of probably more than a hundred millions of human beings. The plant is said to be a native of Arabia Felix and Southern Aby in i a. From the former region it has been carried to various countries within the tropics, and at the present time it is cultivated wherever the climate is suitable. In some countries it seldom attains a greater height than 8 or 10 feet; but in others, its average Fig . 641. -COFFEA ARABICA. height, when full-grown, is from 15 to 20 ft. It is covered with dark, smooth, shining, and evergreen foliage. It is raised from the seed in nurseries, and is transplanted when about 6 months old. In 3 years, it comes into full bearing, and, under favorable circumstances, will continue to bear for 20 years. It blo oms throughout the year, so that mature fruit and opening flower buds may be seen at the same time. The roasted seed or bean has been used to form a beverage in Aby in i a from time immemorial. In Persia known been in use as early as the year 875. From Aby in i a it was introduced into Arabia in the beginning of the 15th century, and about the middle of the following century it began to be used in Constantinople, where, in spite of the violent opposition of the priests, it soon became surface is moderately uneven; the soil mostly sandy and unproductive.
