Philistines

) In his poetry Milton, following the Scriptural usage {e. g., name Palestine to the land now usually Joel 3. 4), applies the called Philistia, the strip of country lying between the highlands of Judea {q. v.), and the sea, bounded on the south by the desert, and on the north extending to Carmel. The adjective “Pales-: tin us” (Ad Patrem 85) means Hebrew. Sandys correctly explains the name thus* “The Pales tines (called Philistines in the Scriptures) … of whom afterwards the whole Land of Promise took the name of Palestine.” (P. 116.) Palest in us.
