[The first form is a diminutive from Sp. palm a =a palm, the second is cla ical Spanish.] Botany : 1. Sabal palmetto , a fan-palm growing in the West Indios, Bermuda, and the southern part of the United States. Its leaves are are woven into hats, like those made of chip. The trunks form good stockades, and were used for the purpose during the War of Independence. 2. Chamærops humilis , a palm from Southern Europe. păl-mi-, pref. [PALM.] Palmate. păl-mic, a.
