Isaac, an American inventor, born in Taunton, Ma ., July 26, 1799; learned the goldsmith’s trade; early became interested in the production of alloys; and in 1824 manufactured the first britannia ware in the United States. In 1839, he discovered the well known anti-friction metal which bears his name, Babbitt meta i. For this discovery, the Ma achusetts Charitable Mechanics’ A ociation awarded him a gold medal in 1841, and subsequently om voted him $20,000. He died in Somerville, Ma ., May 26, 1862.
