Le ons from father; first appearance at 10; won scholarship at Leipzig Cons, where studied with Remecke, Paul, and Jada ohn; 1882 teacher at Hamburg Cons., since 1894 director; condr. m Hamburg of concerts of his own and of Philharmonic Soc.and as guest in St. Petersburg, Dresden, Berlin, London, and Italy; condr. N. Y. Philharmonic 1904, Boston Symph. Orch. (1908-12): has comp, symph., songs, pf. and chamber mus. Field- John, pst composer, b. Dublin, July 26, 1782; d. Moscow, Jan. 11, 1837. Son of vlt., grandson of orgt. who was first teacher and a mercile ly severe one; apprenticed to Clement i in London, where he displayed pf. for sale and received pf. le ons; ddbut London 1794; accompanied C. to Paris 1802, to Germany, then to Ru ia where he remained on C’s return 1804, and where he won great succe as player and teacher; 1823 similar succe at Moscow; 1832-33 toured to London, Paris, and Italy, there unappreciated and ill he was taken back to Moscow by Ru ian family; especially important in pf. playing and pf. music as link between Clement i and Chopin; of his many FIORAVANTI compositions most important are poetic, graceful Nocturnes which led way to all later free compositions; as performer remarkable for fulne of tone, variety of expre ion, and repose of manner.
