GALLAGHER, MICHAEL JAMES

(1866), Roman Catholic Bishop. in Michigan. Was educated at A umption College, Ontario, 1884-1885 Muneret College, Ireland, 1885-1889. From 1889-94 at Innsbruck University, Austria. In 1803 was ordained priest oman Catholic urch. as pastor Carroll ton, Michigan, and St. Andrews, Grand Rapids. In 1895 was bishop’s| Diocese of Grand Rapids. 1912-16 ° consecrated vicar-general. In 1915 was coadjutor bishop of Grand Rapids. 1916 succeeded as bishop of Rapids. Was transferred in 1918, See of Detroit. Fr. Orientalist and numismatist; traveled through Asia Minor, Syria, and copying inscriptions and collecting etc.; prof. of Arabic at College 1709; member of Academy; did much stimulate interest in Eastern Amer. statesman; b. Geneva, of and honorable family; ed. Geneva;| graduated, 1779; went to Ma achusetts 1780, made his way south, and politics. In view of 1787 Constitution, G. was one of founders of Anti-Federalist party (afterwards the Republican). Chosen a Senator, 1793, but his annulled 1794, partly because of popularity he iheurred. over Insurrection. Elected to House Representatives, 1795, and _ leadership of Republican party. 1798 his career was a remarkable] triumph. Became Sec. of Treasury minister to France, 1816. In 1826 was in England over North-East dary question. Retired, 1827.
