(Sax. spunb.) In the Fine Arts, a word of various application. In Painting, it is the first layer of colour on which the figures or other objects are painted; in Sculpture, it is the surface from which, in relievi, the figures rise; and in Architecture, it is used to denote the face of the scenery or country round a building.
