Bennett, Salisbury, Oct. 22, 1833—London, May 11, 1885; organist, teacher and composer. (3) Walter Bond, Exeter, April 21, 1829—Oxford, 1910; organist; pupil of Wesley and Bishop; 1886, Mus. Doc. Oxford; 1889, came to New York; c. oratorios, etc. (4) Henry Franklin Belknap, Somerville, Ma ., Sept. 26, 1868—Cambridge, Ma ., May 19, 19283. violin pupil of Mollenhauer; studied harmony with G. H. Howard and for 3 years with Mac Do well; 1892-1901 in busine , then took up composition. His work is full of originality and character; c. Comedy Overture on Negro Themes (Boston Symph., Io11); A meri canes que, “wo Episodes, I, Legend; II, Episode, Boston (1896, and often elsewhere); “‘Salammbo’s Invocation to Tanith’? for soprano and orch. (1906); ‘‘.A merican Dances in Rag-Time”’ for orch.; symph. poem, ‘‘The Dance in Place Congo”; for piano ‘Indian Scenes,” “* Negro Episode,” etc., many beautiful songs, including the well-known “Pirate Song”; also ‘‘ Negro Rhapsody” (1913), and symph. prologue “Riders to the Sea’ (t915). He lectured at Harvard and Columbia Univs.; his ‘‘Place Congo’? was given as a ballet at Met. Op., 1918.
