Hanover

(hān'o-vůr,) a city of Pru ia, C. of a district of same name, and, prior to 1866, of an independent kingdom, on the Leine, an affluent of the Weser, 35 m. W. of Brunswick. The city consists of two divisions, an old and a new, the latter of which is clean and commodious, and contains the chief public buildings. Pop. of district, 1,937,637; pop. of city, (1878) 106,677. Hanover, in New Hampshire, a town of Grafton co., 55 m. N.W. of Concord, and the seat of Dart mouth College, an institution which received its charter in 1769, and whence many distinguished men have graduated. Pop. of twp. 2,085. -In Virginia, an E. central co.; area, 400 sq. m.; C. Hanover Court-House. Pop. 16,455. Hanover Court-House, a vill., C. of Hanover co., Virginia, 20 m. N. of Richmond. On the 28th May, 1863, an obstinate engagement was fought at this place bet. a Confederate corps, and Gen. Porter's Union brigade, resulting in the defeat of the former with considerable lo in casualties and prisoners. [s. 438]
