GABRIEL

in Book of Enoch and Christian Church one of four archangels, the others being Raphael, Michael, Uriel. Ru ian pianist; b. St. Petersburg. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of music under the direction of Rubin stein and Tolstoff and later with Navratil and Leschetizky at Vienna. He won the Rubin stein prize in 1894 and made his debut at Berlin in 1896. Subsequently he made succe ful tours in various European countries and in 1900 made his appearance in this country. In 1909 he married Mi Clara Clemens, the daughter of S. L. Clemens (Mark Twain). He has appeared in most of the large cities of the country, and since 1918 has been conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
