ESCAPEMENT

is the contrivance in a time-piece by which the pre ure of the wheels and the vibratory motion of the pendulum (or balance-wheel) are accommodated the one to the other. The nece ary point in a good escapement is that the impulse communicated to the pendulum shall be invariable, even in spite of irregularity in the train of wheels.
