Escapement

[Fr.] The means in a clock or watch by which the force of the weights or spring is checked and regulated by the motion of the pendulum, or balance acting on a wheel with sharp teeth. They are known as the verge or upright, the anchor-shaped, the cylinder, the duplex, and the lever.
