Bedford

JOHN, Duke of, (běd'förd,) regent of France, 3d son of Henry IV. of England, was B. in 1390. In 1422 Charles VI. of France died, and long years of war followed between the rival claimants of the throne, Charles VII. and Henry VI. of England. Appointed regent of France, B. secured the alliance of the dukes of Burgundy and Britt any, and had a long series of military succe es. The tide turned at the siege of Orleans, which was raised by Joan of Arc. D. at Rouen, 1435. Bedford, a borough of England, C. of an inland co. of same name, is situate on the Ouse, 45 m.
